Steve Jobs

Henry Norr

Steve Jobs’s Jan. 10, 2006, Macworld Expo keynote marked an important milestone in the history of the Mac platform, but not as big or, frankly, as exciting a moment as I and many others had expected.

Two things made the day a bit of a letdown, at least to judge by crowd reactions, as well as my own. One was the absence of hardware the rumor sites and pundits had led us all to expect: lighter, cheaper, Intel-based iBooks; an Intel-based Mac mini or some other “media Mac” with built-in DVR (digital video recorder) and other living-room-oriented features; and an upgraded version of the iPod Shuffle.

The other factor was that Apple, in designing the new Intel-based hardware it did deliver, clearly chose to put its emphasis on continuity rather than change. While both the new iMac and the MacBook Pro have a few appealing new features, from the user perspective, they’re not radical redesigns, and they’re no cheaper than their predecessors.

Henry Norr

After listening to Apple for decades dismiss the SPEC benchmarks as all but meaningless, it’s hard not to notice the irony in the company now trumpeting its SPEC scores. I’m surprised it didn’t present at least a few comparisons done with real-life apps, at least the iLife apps.

Jobs himself, it seemed to me, somewhat undercut the announcement of the new iMacs by declaring at the outset that they’re the same as their G5-based predecessors in design, features, and price.

… so even if the new iMac is only as good and no better, it should have a bright future. And if the Intel Core Duo processor delivers the 2-3X boost in performance Jobs claimed, or even just the 2X claimed in Apple’s press release, with real-life applications, the picture looks even better.

And applications that are PowerPC-native but require a G5 processor won’t run on Rosetta, either. That includes the current versions of Apple’s own “Pro” apps – Final Cut Pro and Express, Logic Pro and Express, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and Aperture. Jobs said Intel-native versions of FCP, Aperture, and Logic Pro are due March; as far as I know, there’s no word yet on the others.

One big question I haven’t been able to get a definitive answer to: will the iMacs (and the MacBook Pro and forthcoming Intel-based Macs) run Windows? At the Apple booth the best answer I could get was “Probably, but we don’t support that.” At the Microsoft booth, even the Virtual PC demonstrator said his team didn’t know the answer, though they had established that Virtual PC simply crashes on the Intel Macs.

If, in fact, Windows will run reliably on the Apple hardware, some developer is sure to produce a dual-boot utility that would let users choose between Microsoft and Apple operating systems – or maybe even some software that enable them both to run simultaneously. If that happens, I think it could bring a flood of new switchers to the Mac platform, because it would remove most of the risk from the change. at the price of a Windows license plus the utility software I’m envisioning, they’d be able to try out the Mac, and stick to it where it excels, without losing access to the games and specialized apps that aren’t available for the Mac platform.

So far Apple seems uninterested in promoting this approach, and, as a Mac consultant pointed out to me on the show floor, the company certainly has no interest in taking on the burden of support for Windows on its machines.

At a glance, the MacBook Pro looks pretty much like recent 15-inch PowerBook G4s. …

One issue about which Apple isn’t ready to talk is battery life – Jobs didn’t mention it, and staffers at the booth said they couldn’t say anything about it, ostensibly because the company hasn’t finished its testing. I’m not sure that’s a good sign, but the battery is designed to provide 60 watt-hours, up from 50 in the current 15-inch PowerBooks, and Apple’s booth people assured me that battery life would be “competitive” – whatever that means.

For me the biggest disappointment of the day was that Apple didn’t make its move on the living room with a new “media Mac” – a machine that could link Mac-resident music, photos, and video to living-room A/V gear and also function as a DVR for television programming. In the wake of Front Row and the video iPods and video programming on the iTunes store, it’s simply not believable that Apple isn’t working on some such product(s), and I’d hoped we’d see at least one major one this week.
