iTablet – handheld monitor for video iPod

実際にビデオ iPod を手にしてみるとスクリーンがいかにも小さい。

Wow, crisp colors, but screen so small! — That was my first impression, with a video iPod in my hand at the store.

ビデオ iPod につないで見ることのできる携帯用モニターが欲しい。

このところ、モニター部分を自由に動かせる新しいノート型も出始めた。

Digital Vessel という考え方

ビデオ iPod について書かれた記事の中で、Bob Cringely のコラムは特におもしろかった。

アメリカには DVDstation というキオスク（貸ビデオ屋みたいなもの？）があるという。DVD を貸すだけでなく、焼き付けもするらしい。

その DVDstation が、こんどの新しい iPod を店に持ってくれば、HD の映画を 90 秒以内でダウンロードすると発表したのだという。

Well, DVDstation just announced that you can plug your video-enabled iPod into their kiosk and download an HD movie in 90 seconds or less.

This is a compelling model, placing the equivalent of a completely automated Blockbuster video store in a few square feet at, say, The Gap or any other retailer that doesn’t presently have a competing video sales operation. The video-enabled iPod becomes the vessel for transporting movies from store to home and of course they don’t have to be returned. Apple, meanwhile, can sell iPods to people who like movies but don’t typically carry their music with them — a whole new class of iPod customers.

するとどうなるか。

iPod は、映画というデジタルコンテンツを家にもって帰るための容器（digital vessel）の役割を果たすことになる。iPod を使ったビデオストアの誕生だ。音楽を聞くというこれまでの iPod とはまったく違った新しい使い方と、そのマーケットが出現するという訳だ。

DVDstation がアップルストアの近くぞくぞくできれば、映画会社も参入してくるにちがいない。それを見計らってアップルは、次期ワイヤレスの 802.11n が可能な Video Express を投入するだろう、というのだ。

But wait, there’s more! When the Apple experiment is complete and successful, we’ll see the movie studios sign on, at which point Apple will finally announce that Video Express, which is the component still required to practically link this new video system to your TV. That rash of products will also include Apple’s much faster 802.11n version of its Airport access point, which suggests that the Video Express will be 802.11n as well, which figures.

いつもながらの Cringely 節だ。先の先を読んだビジネスモデルを示してくれるところが Cringely らしい。

iPod を直接映画を見るための機器ではなく、家に持って帰る容器（digital vessel）として捉えたところが新鮮でおもしろい。

・・・ここまで Cringely に刺激されたのなら、もう一歩進めて考えてみてはどうだろう。

Digital vessel は、iPod でなくてもいいのではないか。

十分な容量と大型テレビへの出力装置を持ったものを競合他社が作ったらどうなるか。いま iPod から閉め出されているメーカーにもチャンスができるのではないか。

もっといえば、こういうダウンロードサービスは iTunes Music (Video/Movie) Store とは別の選択肢になるのではないか。

考えれば考えるほどおもしろい。

ビデオ iPod オンパレード

１０月１２日の Apple Media Event が近づくにつれて、なにが登場するか、予測が白熱している。

朝日まで記事にするのだから、世界中では推して知るべしだ。「one more thing」でブログを検索すると、あるはあるは、すごい数だ。

真偽のほどは定かでないが、ビデオ iPod のいろいろな画像がネットに流れはじめた。

白眉はトップの写真だろう。・・・もっとも、まったくの想像だと描いた本人はいっているが。（iPod Predictions）

video iPod を肴にしてみんなが楽しんでいる感じだ。

BBC がうっかり（？）ニュースを流したりして、結構期待を煽っている。

もっとも、今回はビデオ iPod ではないという意見も強い。

ハーバード大生のサイト Think Secret によれば、今回は Power Mac や PowerBook が主で、ビデオ iPod は登場しないという。

年末商戦のことを考えれば、たしかに iPod よりマックのテコ入れが必要な時期ではある。

あとしばらくですべてが分かる。もう少しのお楽しみだ。

One more thing…

「あ、それからもうひとつあるんだ・・・」

新製品を発表するときの Jobs の決まり文句を真っ赤なカーテンに刷り込んだアップルの招待状が発出された。

例によって何があるかは伏せたまま、１０月１２日の出席者だけに発表されるスペシャルイベントだ。これまたアップルの好きな水曜日。

前回 iPod nano を発表したときも、同じような招待状が発出されたが、このときの図柄はリーバイスのジーンズだった。

当日は iPod nano 登場の段で、リーバイスのポケット、それも小さな小銭入れから、これまた小さな iPod nano を引っ張りだしてみせた。

リーバイスの図柄にはちゃんと意味があったのだ。

じゃあ、今回はどうか。真っ赤なカーテンだ。

幕が開くと・・・　そう、映画の上映が始まる。なにか映画やビデオに関係するものではないか。いや、きっとそうに違いない。

前回のイベントで、フラシュメモリーベースの iPod mini ＝ iPod nano と iTunes 携帯は紹介済みだから、あと残っているのはビデオ iPod だけだ。どうやらそんな感じではないか。

John Markoff 流にいえば、ホーム映画劇場用の video set-top box か、palmtop device か、あるいはなんらかの portable video player ということかもしれない。

いずれ噂系の Think Secret あたりが詳細を報じるだろう。アップルに訴えられて以来、Think Secret の信憑性はとみに増した感がある。

ほんとにビデオ・映画関係なら、ハードはもちろんだが、コンテンツやネット配信も絡むから、そのうち映画会社・レコード会社やネット配信会社の関係者から情報が漏れてくるに違いない。

大手メディア、噂系サイトとも、早くもエンジン全開だ。（AppleInsider は、60GB iPod photo player を心持ち薄くしたようなビデオ機能搭載の iPod だろうと予想している。）

発表は米国西海岸の朝１０時、日本時間では翌日明け方２時だ。目が覚めた頃には、全貌が明らかになっているだろう。

マックファンとしてはまたぞろ一週間の間気が気でなくなるが、そんなことじゃ Jobs が舞台に上がる前から彼の術中に嵌っているといわれるのがオチかもしれない。
