2005 年にビデオを掲載し始めたとき、YouTube は主としてホームビデオ投稿の場だった。しかし人気が爆発すると、読者はありとあらゆるビデオを投稿し始めた。古いテレビ番組、新しいテレビ番組、ミュージックビデオ、政治宣伝、DIY ドキュメンタリー、ドラマ、コメディ、その他一過性のもろもろ・・・

When it first began hosting videos in November 2005, YouTube was primarily a venue for posting and viewing homemade clips, but as its popularity exploded, users started posting all kinds of old and new television shows, music videos, political ads and DIY documentaries, dramas, comedies and other ephemera…

つぎの１０のビデオ（順不同）は、「YouTube 現象」（YouTube phenomenon）の典型的な例だ。大部分は YouTube の「最大視聴」、「お好みトップ」リストから選んだ。視聴率がそれほどないものあるが、それ自体よく知られているものだ。あるものは YouTube のコメディ能力を裏書きしてユーモアがある。また、ほかのものは深い感動を与え、また才能を発掘する。このどれもが YouTube を成功に導くのに大きく与っており、そして我々がメディアを消費するやり方をすっかり変えてしまったのだ。

What follows are 10 videos–in no particular order–that exemplify the YouTube phenomenon. Many are culled from the “Most Viewed” and “Top Favorites” lists that YouTube maintains. A few are less viewed but still notorious in their own right. Some of them are funny, underlining YouTube’s comedic strengths. Others show impressive emotional depth and talent. But all of them have helped contribute to the site’s success and changed the way we consume our media.
