８コアのその先は・・・

インテルのクワッドコアプロセッサ（Clovertown）が発表されたばかりなのに、もうクワッドコアを二つ積んだ８コア（４コア×２）の Mac Pro が登場した。

ただしアップルが出したのではない。ハッカーやハードコアゲーマーでもなく、なんと正統派メディアの CNET がプロセッサの換装とベンチマークテストをやってのけたのだ。

Anadtech の試み

近々出るインテルのクワッドコア（quad-core）プロセッサ Clovertown を Anandtech がテストしたという９月のニュースを覚えているだろうか。Anadtech の試みはうまくいったが、みんなの好きなベンチマークについてはあまり触れていなかった。

You might remember back in September that we reported that Anandtech had tested the upcoming Clovertown, Intel’s quad-core CPU, in the Apple Mac Pro. You might also remember that Anadtech was sucessful in their endeavor, but they were a little sparse on what many of you love: benchmarking.

Clovertown の換装

心配はいらない。CNET が Mac Pro の保証を無効にしてまで、Xeon 5355 プロセッサ（コード名中毒のひとのためにいえば Clovertown だ）を二つ差し替え、そこそこの 2.6GHzのスピードで走らせてくれたのだ。

Well have no fear, because CNet has gone and voided their Mac Pro warranty by sticking a couple of Xeon 5355 processors—Clovertowns for you code name junkies—running at a not-to-shabby 2.6GHz.

ベンチマーク

ベンチマークを測るという試みは、PyMOL 生体分子構造グラフィックス（PyMOL molecular-modeling rendering test）の人気が出たことで始まった。驚いたことに、2.6GHz、８コアで作動する Mac Pro より、3.0 および 2.6GHz で作動する４コアマシンの方がスピードが勝（まさ）っているのだ。この状況はどのベンチマークでもほとんど同じだ。すなわち、マルチスレッドのアプリケーションでは８コアが勝（まさ）るが、すべてのコアのフル稼働を要しない Quake FPS［注：Doom と並ぶファーストパーソン・シューティングゲーム（FPS）］（これ以上にベンチマークを必要とするものがあるだろうか）や iTunes のエンコーディングなどでは４コアマシンが勝るのだ。

The benchmarking adventure begins with the ever-so-popular PyMOL molecular-modeling rendering test in which, surprise, the Mac Pro running at 2.6GHz with 8 cores pretty much owned the 4-core machines running at 3.0 and 2.6GHz. The story is the same in most of the benchmarks—the 8 core machine wins in the multithreaded applications but the 4 core machine wins in things that don’t take advantage of every core available like Quake FPS (do you really need any other benchmark?) and iTunes encoding.

それだけの価値はあるか

アップルが直ちにクワッドコアのバンドワゴンに飛びつくとは思えない。現時点では、アップルにとってもほとんどのユーザーにとってもあまり得るところがないからだ。科学計算の世界を除けば、ほとんどのアプリケーションは４コアは勿論のこと２コアの恩恵すら与（あずか）っていないのだ。クワッドコアチップのコストは大変高額になると思われるが、ユーザーが実感できない程度の性能向上ではほとんどメリットはないと思われる。たぶん可能性として考えられるのは、Mac Pro ラインより前に XServe ラインにクワッドコアチップが搭載されるのが先だろうということだ。それも時が経ってみなければ分からない。

I don’t see Apple jumping on the quad-core bandwagon any time soon. There isn’t much in it, at this point, for Apple or most consumers. Most applications, bar those that are used in the scientific world, don’t take advantage of 2 cores, let alone 4 per processor. The elevated cost of the new quad core chips likely wont be worth the performance boost most users won’t even see from all those cores. Perhaps a more likely scenario will be seeing quad core chips in the XServe line before we ever see them in the Mac Pro line, but only time will tell.

Xeon 5355で換装

Mac Proに搭載されたXeon 5160と、新登場したXeon 5355は同じソケットにさせることから、CNET Labsではこの換装を思い立ったらしい。そして、2つあるデュアルコアチップをそれぞれ4コアチップに載せ換え、以下5つの異なる構成のマシンで比較を行ったという（Windows XP稼働マシンについてはBootCampを利用、またIntel QX6700 4コアは他社製マシンを使用。システム構成の詳細は文末を参照のこと）。［坂和敏訳］

Today marks Intel’s first official day of the quad-core processor era with the release of quad-core processors for enthusiasts (the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700) and for servers and workstations (the Intel Xeon 5355)–and Intel was kind enough to supply CNET Labs with a pair of 2.66GHz Xeon 5355 processors. As the Xeon 5355 is pin-compatible with the Xeon 5160 processors that came installed in our Mac Pro, we proceeded to swap out the two dual-core processors with the new quad-core processors.

結果は・・・

以上のような結果をふまえ、CNET Labsでは、「8コアは（少なくとも現時点では）やり過ぎ」としながら、「今後マルチスレッド／マルチプロセッサをサポートするアプリケーションが増えていけば、4ないし8コアといったマルチコアプロセッサのもたらす威力も実感されるだろう」との結論を出している。［坂和敏訳］

It will be interesting to see how long it is before Apple migrates the Mac Pro over to the new quad-core Xeon chip and makes an eight-core system publicly available. But unless you do work normally relegated to high-end workstations, perform massively multitasking workloads, or just want the bragging rights, eight cores is definitely overkill…at least for now. As more applications become available that support multithreading across multiple processing cores, the benefits of quad- and octo-cores will be realized.

ハッカーでもなくゲーマーでもない CNET が火をつけたことは、この先にあるものを暗示させるような気がする。

インテルが新しいチップを投入するたびに、望むと望まざるとに拘らずアップルはそれに対応していかなければならない。

Dual-Core Xeon の Mac Pro がやっとユーザーの手に届こうとしているその矢先に、みんなの目は４コア、８コアに向いてしまう。

アップルがやるとなれば、チップの換装だけでは済まされない。マザーボードや OS、アプリケーションに至るまで、新しいチップが効果を発揮するものでなければならない。アップルといえども容易なことではあるまい。

アップルの意図とは別のところで、新しいプロセッサへの圧力が増していくのだ。

インテル移行で行き着いたその先には、どんな未来が開けるのだろうか。
