HDTV Media Center としての Mac mini

大型液晶テレビの大画面で高解像度の映画を見ること、それが Media Center の最大の魅力だろう。

新しい Intel Mac mini の HDTV 出力能力に熱い眼差しを注ぐひとたちがいる。そんな記事を二つ・・・

まず最初は、The HDTV Tuner の記事。

ハイデフィニション映像をテレビ出力するという観点から見ると、新しい Mac mini には特筆すべき機能がある。

まず、Core Duo プロセッサだ。HDTV は G4 には荷が重すぎたが、Core Duo なら楽々と処理できるだろう。

Why’s this important? Well, there is no way that you would want to use a PowerPC Mac mini to watch HDTV. You could record it, but the number crunching necessary to play it back is beyond the G4. The Core Duo on the other hand, should handle it with ease. The ability to play HDTV is critical for any machine that wants to be taken seriously as a home media center.

まだ、チューナーは内蔵してないが、サードバーティの製品を使えばいい。

The mini still doesn’t have a TV Tuner, but ElGato’s EyeTV 500 and Miglia’s TVMini HD will solve that problem. So the Mac mini can now play HDTV happily.

また、新しいバージョンの Front Row が、ワイヤレスで mini と他のマックを繋げることも重要だ。アップルのリモコンも使える。

But it now ships with a version of but Front Row which can detect other Macs on your network automatically and stream music, video and photos from them to the mini, and Apple’s media remote control.

もうひとつ重要なことは、mini を HDTV に繋ぐための詳しい解説をアップルがホームページに載せたことだ。

Finally Apple has added information to the Mac mini pages on its website that describe exactly how to connect the mini to an HDTV and how to set the resolution and other settings on the mini to optimise playback on a TV. It’s also provided links to a handful of third party sites which describe how to use the mini as a media center.

これらを全部まとめてみると、mini をハイデフィニション media center にする計画を、アップルが着々と進めていることが分かる。あとは HD 規格の映画を iTMS で売り出すだけでよい。

On their own, none of the improvements mean a great deal in HDTV terms, but together they suggest Apple is well on its way to turning the Mac mini into a high definition media center. All it needs now is to start selling high definition movies and TV shows on iTunes. Watch this space.

HDTV 出力を可能にするマックがついに出た！　各種アダプターも付属しており、解像度の選択もできる。これでテレビが DVI、HDMI、VGA のどの端子を備えていようが関係なしに HD 映像が楽しめる。

It’s finally arrived: the Mac that is made to be used with your HDTV! Browsing through Apple’s list of accessories for the new Mac mini reveals just what we have been waiting for. Not only do they list the various adapters that we mentioned in our “How to connect your PC to your HTPC” article but they also mention all the various resolutions. So it doesn’t matter if you have DVI, HDMI, or VGA, you are covered.

一番うれしいのは解像度だ。かつてはサードバーティの DisplayConfigX などを使わないと正しい解像度が設定できなかったが、今度は OS X 自体がサポートしているようだ。音声も DD 5.1 が楽しめる。

I am the most excited about the mention of the resolutions; in the past you would have to use a third party product such as DisplayConfigX to get your Mac mini to output the correct resolution, now it seems it’s supported by OSX. This in combination with the overscan adjustment built into to the display preferences is very impressive. Audio was considered as well as the new Mac mini includes SPDIF in and out so you can enjoy DD 5.1 in all it’s glory.

Core Solo 1.5 が H.264 のデコードに十分な能力を備えているとすれば、あと必要なのは HD 映画だけだ。

Now all we need are HD movies via iTunes and life would be perfect. I am of course assuming that the Core Solo 1.5 is fast enough to decode H.264 HD material.
